“Great Ideals”: Leighton Park and the First World War

Great Ideals Leighton Park and WW1 Cover web (3)Leighton Park’s commemoration of the First World War is under way with a book by the Archivist John Allinson and former student Charlotte Smith.

Drawing on rich materials from the school’s own Archives and resources from the Cadbury Archives and Friends House, the book not only explores the dilemmas faced by former students who, as Quakers, had to choose between fighting for their country, or some other form of war service or becoming Conscientious Objectors. It also, importantly, enables us to find out about the brief lives of those men whose names appear on the school’s War Memorial.

The BBC is featuring the lives of two of the school’s old boys, brother Egbert and Lawrence Cadbury, whose responses to the way were totally opposite: http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b045gjw5/world-war-i-at-home-cadburys-at-war

Profits from the book will go to projects in Malawi, Tanzania and Uganda, which Sixth Formers will be working on in October 2014.
